What is social emotional learning?
At AFIA, we know that social emotional learning is just as important as academic learning. Social emotional learning helps students develop the skills necessary to lead purposeful lives, such as:
-
- understanding and managing emotions
- setting goals
- demonstrating empathy for others
- making responsible decisions
- maintaining positive relationships
Social emotional learning is essential in creating a strong classroom community and it is embedded into all aspects of our school day. Please watch as Ms. Doerr, one of our first grade teachers, shares a few of the strategies we use to empower students and develop social emotional skills.
Tardies
It is extremely important for all students to have strong and consistent school attendance. Students should arrive by 7:50AM if they eat breakfast at school. If your child does not each breakfast at school, they must be here by 8:10AM. Students arriving after 8:10AM are considered tardy and miss out on important learning as we begin instruction promptly at 8:10AM.
Covid Protocols
Thank you for helping keep our school community safe by following covid protocols. We want to alert you to one change we’ve made to our safety plan. We are no longer checking temperatures upon arrival to school as the CDC does not recommend schools conduct temperature screenings on a daily basis. Please continue to monitor your child(ren) at home and do not send them to school if they exhibit symptoms of any infectious illness, including covid. If your child is unwell and unable to come to school, please contact the front office as soon as possible at 816-444-1720.
Dress Code (Footwear)
As you know, our dress code requires that students wear closed toes shoes each day. Without proper footwear, students are unable to participate in PE and have limited recess options. Thank you for helping us keep students safe while they engage in physical activity.
