Treats on Troost: AFIA is one of the stops on the drive-through Halloween party, Treats on Troost. We appreciate the Marlborough Community Coalition for hosting this event, and for all they do to support and enhance our community.

We know not everyone celebrates Halloween and even if you do, it looks different this year. Please see this flier from Children’s Mercy for tips on having a safe Halloween.

Reminder: There are no classes on Tuesday, November 3 as this is Election Day. At AFIA, we care deeply about empowering students to make sure their voice is heard and Election Day is the perfect time to talk to kids about the democratic process and how voting is part of being a good citizen. For more information on how you can facilitate conversation about voting, check out 5 Easy Ways to Talk to Kids About Voting.

Fire Safety: October is Fire Prevention Month.  This is a great time for all of us to talk with our families about ways we can stay safe and protect ourselves from house fires.  Making a fire safety plan is one of the best ways to ensure everyone knows what to do and where to go in the case of a fire.  KCParent published this article with tips on creating a fire safety plan with your family.

It is also important to make sure you have a working smoke detector on each level of your home. The Kansas City Fire Department will provide, replace and install smoke detectors free of charge.  To request an installation, call the Smoke Detector line at (816) 513-4648, or fill out the form on their website.

Fall Conferences: Thank you for your conference participation and partnership. Teachers enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with your family to celebrate successes and set goals. We are proud of the way AFIA scholars have demonstrated academic ownership and commitment to personal growth during remote learning.

Arts Integration Family Workshop: We are happy to share that Harlan Brownlee will be leading a second family workshop about Arts Integration in the classroom. If you missed the first one, you can participate in this session! We hope you can join us! Mr. Brownlee works with the AFIA community in integrating movement into learning. Last year, he engaged in teaching residencies with a number of AFIA teachers. Mr. Brownlee brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our community and we are excited for these sessions. Please RSVP here and to receive a Zoom link for this event.
