Announcements

PK/K Meet the Teachers and Material Distribution: We are excited to share that we have school supply kits (crayons, markers, notebook, construction paper, play doh, etc), books and a learning binder to distribute to your child. This Wednesday, your child’s PK/K teacher will be in the parking lot to safely distribute these supplies to your child and family. For more details, visit: http://bit.ly/AFIA912

Parent/Caregiver Virtual Game Night and Title I Annual Meeting (6PM): Next Wednesday, September 23, we are hosting a Virtual Game Night and Title 1 Annual Meeting. In addition to learning more about AFIA’s Title 1 program, this is an opportunity to connect with other AFIA parents and caregivers. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to receive a meeting link.

The Elementary and Secondary School Act, Title I Part A, requires that each Title I school hold an annual meeting for the parents and families to:

  • Inform you of our participation in Title I, Part A
  • Explain the requirements of Title I, Part A
  • Share your rights and opportunities as parents and families to be involved in your child’s learning and achievement

First Grade Assessments: Over the next several weeks, Ms. Gwen, AFIA’s LACES enrichment teacher and project coach,  will work with our first graders to complete a literacy assessment. We use this assessment to understand how we can best meet individual student needs. You can learn more about the PALS assessment here.  Students usually find some of the parts to be fun and others a bit monotonous.  We want them to know that they are not expected to know everything on each task.  However, it is important for students to try their best on each part so teachers gain accurate information.  Our teachers use this information to create student learning goals.

Ms. Gwen will schedule each child for a block of time outside of their live instructional time for this assessment. She will send you a message on Seesaw and via email or text so you know your child’s scheduled time and the Google Meet code. If you have questions, feel free to contact Ms. Gwen at gwen.vanasselt@afiakc.org.

Weekly Family Reports: Begining this week, your child’s teacher will send home a weekly family report to provide information about your child’s participation from the previous week and provide an overview of learning for the week ahead. Please review the Weekly Family Report with your child and contact their teacher if you have any questions. We appreciate your partnership.

Drive-Up COVID Testing: Children’s Mercy is offering drive-up COVID-19 testing for symptomatic children ages birth through 18. Please see this flyer for additional details.

Technology Support: We partner with K12itc for technology support and have access to a help desk from 8AM-5PM. If you are having technology issues with your school-issued chromebook or iPad, please call K12itc at 816-382-4840 and they can assist you.
