A Special Surprise from 15 and the Mahomies!
AFIA students and staff had a special surprise today! As part of Patrick Mahomes’ Read for 15 initiative, the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation sent Minsky’s pizza for our entire school! After we enjoyed some pizza, we celebrated with fifteen minutes of extra reading on this red Friday.
Personal Safety Presentations
The physical and emotional safety of our students is always our first priority. Next week students will participate in a presentation about personal safety with representatives from Sunflower House. Programs are differentiated based on the age of the student and they are designed to educate students on safe and healthy body boundaries. Letters were sent home with students earlier this week. You can also find more information on the Sunflower House website. Please reach out to Mrs. Daniels at jenessa.daniels@afiakc.org or (816) 444-1720 if you have any questions.
Book Fair
KSHB 41 did a fantastic job on capturing the excitement of the book fair at AFIA! We are grateful to the Scripps Howard Foundation and everyone who contributed to this effort. If you missed the news clip last week, you can check it out here.
Library
In addition to the book fair, we are excited to share that we began library checkout this week. Research shows that reading to, or with, someone at home for at least 30 minutes makes a significant difference in students’ long term academic success. We know that students are more invested in reading when they choose books they’re interested in, so we’re excited to return to weekly library checkout!
2022-2023 Enrollment for NEW Students & School Saturday
If you have a student that attends AFIA and you would like to enroll a sibling for the 2022-2023 school year, please read this information regarding open enrollment. Please spread the word that we are currently enrolling for next year. AFIA is participating in School Saturday this weekend. Please share this with your networks. If you are on facebook, you can share this video: https://fb.watch/aNdEHhpKiM/.
Winter Weather and Outdoor Recess
Thank you for sending students to school with winter weather gear. We consider multiple factors, including temperature and windchill, when determining if we can have outdoor recess, but we do have outoor recess whenever possible as we know that unstructured free play contributes to students’ physical, social, emotional and intellectual development. As a reminder, please label your child’s coats, hats and gloves so they do not end up in the lost and found. If your family needs assistance with winter weather wear, please reach out to their teacher or Mrs. Daniels, our social worker.
