There is no school Monday, November 21st-Friday, November 25. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, November 28th. During this season of gratitude, we are grateful for each of our AFIA families and hope you enjoy a safe, joyful Fall Break.

Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the culture, history and traditions of Native Americans. This article from the Kansas City Star has information about the many Native American cultural sites in our area.
Today we had a guest reader during Harambee help us learn about our local Native American history. Rebecca Liberty, member of the Ioway (Baxoje) Tribe, original to the lands of Northern Missouri and state of Iowa, read from Black Elk’s Vision: A Lakota Story.
Pantry Distribution

After School Clubs
Cooking Club chefs enjoyed making (and eating) delicious food!
We are so excited to share that we have over 100 students participating in 16 clubs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Club activities include African dance, cooking, chess, martial arts, clay creations, theater. Club teachers include teaching artists from Next Paige, Kansas City Young Audiences and City in Motion. We will hold another round of clubs next semester and will share that information soon! Thank you to everyone who is participating and thank you for your patience during club pick up time.
Family Advisory Committee
At our October Family Advisory Committee meeting, parents and caregivers provided feedback on AFIA’s strategic plan goals related to family partnerships.The purpose of the Family Advisory Committee is for families and school staff to collaboratively develop family partnership goals, determine action steps to support the goals, and continually assess and monitor progress toward the goals.
We hope you can join us at our next Family Advisory Committee Meeting on Thursday, December 15th at 6PM. Childcare is provided, but we do as that you RSVP here.
