Alvin Ailey
We are excited to share that the Alvin Ailey Trio will be at AFIA on Friday, January 13th to perform for our students. The dancers are members of the nationally known Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and are traveling to KC to perform in schools and the Gem Theater.
There is a free performance at the Gem Theater (1615 East 18th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64108) this Thursday, January 12th at 7:00 PM.
AFIA Family Advisory Committee (FAC)
The next Family Advisory Committee meeting is Thursday, January 19th at 5PM. Please join us as we discuss our vision for social emotional learning at AFIA and recent changes we’ve made to the Student Success Center. See this flier for more details and the link to RSVP. We hope to see you there!
Parent and Family Engagement Policy
Each year, our leadership team collaborates with families and staff members to create our Parent and Family Engagement policy in compliance with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). You can locate AFIA’s current Parent and Engagement policy here. If you have any feedback or questions about this plan, please reach out to our principal, Karren Colbert at karren.colbert@afiakc.org or attend a Family Advisory Committee meeting. We would love to see you at the next FAC meeting.
After School Clubs Feedback
Thank you to everyone who participated in after school clubs. If your family participated in the after school clubs, we would love your feedback. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey. The after school clubs were made possible through a grant from the Kauffman grant to support the implementation of AFIA’s equity work plan.
We will share the sign up form for this semester’s clubs in early February. We plan to begin the next round of clubs on March 7th.
2023-2024 New Student Enrollment
We are accepting applications for NEW STUDENTS ONLY for the 2023-2024 school year. More information on applying is here. If you have a student who will be four by August 2, 2023, you are eligible to apply for AFIA’s FREE pre-kindergarten program. If you have friends or family who are new to AFIA, please encourage them to sign up for a tour.
AFIA February Pantry Distribution
- The form for February AFIA Pantry distribution will open on January 23
- The deadline to sign up for February distribution is Monday, January 30 @ 8AM
- Distribution day is Thursday February 9
Start at Zero
Our community partner, Start at Zero, is launching their second Family & Community Leadership Program cohort on February 18th! There are 12 spots available for this cohort.
There are a few 30-minute virtual info sessions this week and next. The first is tomorrow from 6-6:30 pm. Please feel free to register here if you’d like to learn more about this fantastic opportunity.

Family Teacher Conferences
Family teacher conferences will be the week of February 13th. We will share more information, including links to sign up for conferences on January 27th.
