Kansas City author and illustrator Charlie Mylie makes a special “virtual” visit to our AFIA students. Check it out in Ms. Gwen’s newsletter.

Hello, families. We know that you are receiving updates from your child(ren)’s classroom teacher, as well as our leadership team. Our goal is to keep you informed and also thoughtfully streamline communication. Now that we are settling into our new, but temporary, normal, we will resume our regularly weekly update as well.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher or any member of the leadership team. Our contact information is included below.

Announcements:

  • No Classes on Friday: As a reminder, this Friday, April 10, is a Professional Development Day for AFIA staff. Your child(ren)’s class will not have a class meeting and you will not receive a task list from their teacher on Friday.
  • Family Committee Meeting: We are holding our first online Family Committee Meeting on Friday, April 10, from 2-2:45PM. We hope you can join us to connect with other families and share your insight regarding our remote learning programming. Please rsvp if you can participate. You will receive a follow-up email with a meeting link, as well as directions for joining the online meeting.
  • Internet Access: Xfinity has opened up free hotspots in our area. Instructions to access them are here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/open-xfinitywifi-hotspots. We realize that this may not work for everyone, but it’s the fastest method of getting internet onto your child’s devices currently, and is definitely worth a try. If you still are experiencing issues, please feel free to call or text Mr. Alex for assistance at 816.406.1164. Please leave a message if he is unavailable and he will return your call within one business day.
  • Technology Support: We partner with K12itc for technology support and have access to a help desk from 8AM-5PM. If you are having technology issues with your school-issued chromebook or iPad, please call K12itc at 816-382-4840 and they can assist you.
  • Art & LACES Newsletters: Your family will enjoy these updates from enrichment teachers Ms. Gwen and Ms. Dorothy. Ms. Gwen’s update includes a visit from a special guest author and a challenge to create and share an artifact with her. Ms. Dorothy’s newsletter has great suggestions for creating landscape art, as well as links to other art activities and virtual art museums your family can explore.
  • Weekly Food Distribution: We will continue to distribute food on Wednesdays at AFIA from 10 – 1 PM. We are opening this up to the community at noon. If you know people who are in need of food with children under 18, please let them know that the community may pick up food boxes from noon – 2 PM on Wednesdays at AFIA. The boxes include ten quality meals (5 breakfasts and 5 lunches). You can get one box for each child in your household (younger than 18).
  • Communication: All AFIA communication related to COVID-19 can be found here. To see updates from the city of Kansas City, please see this website. For remote learning information from MO’s Department of Secondary and Elementary Education, please see this link.
